Pride and Prejudice (Hardcover Classics) is the story about a wealthy young gentleman named Charles Bingley, who rents out the manor of Netherfield Park. This is a matter of excitement in the nearby village of Longbourn, especially in the Bennet household. The Bennets have five unmarried daughters, namely Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia. Mrs. Bennet wishes them all to be married well and as soon as possible.
Mr. Bennet happens to call on Mr. Bingley to introduce himself. The Bennets then attend a ball where Mr. Bingley is also present. He is enamoured with Jane and dances most of the evening with her. Also present is his close friend, Mr. Darcy, who refuses to dance with Elizabeth initially. However, he is slowly drawn towards Elizabeth. Meanwhile, Jane's friendship with Mr. Bingley also progresses.
Mr. Collins, a young clergyman, is soon introduced and stands to inherit Mr. Bennet's property since he is a male heir. Mr. Bennet has daughters who are legally not allowed to inherit his property. Mr. Collins is enthralled by the Bennet girls and proposes marriage to Elizabeth, but she turns him down. There is also a young soldier named Wickham, who has been stationed in the village where his unit has been garrisoned.
